About Me
I am Moira Newiss, a Registered Nutritional Therapist and Health Coach & Accredited Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy expert. I have resolved my own health issues including chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, depersonalisation, derealisation. I did this by using lifestyle strategies including diet to reverse the root causes of my ill health.

Along the way I became an expert on the use of ketogenic diets as a powerful metabolic medicine. I have become fascinated with the way our brain and body make and use energy and how this is crucial if we want to be happy and healthy.

I have a family history of fatigue and mental health problems including suicide, depression and dementia. Many of the current treatments for these conditions are not working for many people and I want to give people hope that there are other solutions that can be used alongside more traditional treatments. One of those which is demonstrating better results than many drugs is a ketogenic diet. This is because it enables the cells in our body, including those in our brain and nervous system, to use fat as a fuel instead of glucose. Not only does it ensure that the cells get sufficient energy to thrive but it also drastically reduces inflammation too.
A chronic condition does not mean you have to accept it for life.
The good news is that all chronic diseases are lifestyle diseases including mental illnesses which means it is often possible to reverse or put them into remission using lifestyle solutions.. I can help you to understand what has gone wrong with the biology of your body and how to begin to take simple steps to get back your physical and mental energy and start the transition to a new healthier and happier you.
Why I'm the right practitioner for you
I experienced chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety and debilitating brain fog whilst pursuing a career as a senior manager in the NHS.
After battling on for a while I eventually reached a point of no return finding myself on the sofa every afternoon and struggling to look after my children, unable to cook the dinner or do the cleaning and no longer able to do my job effectively.
I felt detached like the world was going on around me, like the life had been drained out of me, I felt useless and a burden on my family. I simply couldn't carry on and I was desperate to find a solution.
All my tests were normal and my GP couldn't help me.

With little advice or expertise available on the NHS I did my own research and put it into practice. As I regained the energy in my brain and body I became fascinated about how we make our energy, what can go wrong with it and what we can do to get it back again. Along the way I changed career and retrained as a nutritional therapist and health coach. I discovered that chronic fatigue conditions such as ME/CFS and long covid have the same underlying physiological root causes as mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disease. That means there is a biological explanation and there are biomarkers such as inflammation, blood sugar, insulin other hormones that can be tested for that can give us a clue to what is going on. The good news is that these root causes can be addressed with relatively simple changes in diet and other lifestyle medicine approaches.
One of these solutions is the ketogenic diet which can be used alongside other lifestyle changes. It is one aspect of what is known as the biopsychosocial model. All of these factors impact on the mitochondria in our cells, the little tiny organelles that make our energy. Targeting these factors is the best approach to resetting our brain and body energy and rebooting our vitality. I'm a big believer in reconnecting ourselves to the basic principles of human evolution and how we are designed to live, including what we need to eat to thrive as a species. It is not rocket science and we can easily make a plan that will work for you and your situation.
I love the fact I can use my knowledge and expertise to help other people learn how to reboot their energy levels, how to get back both physical and mental energy balance and simply feel better!
Recovery is possible
I hope my story gives you hope that it is possible to not only get well again, but to really thrive, to get back more energy and vitality than you thought was possible.
I now race my bike, climb the Scottish mountains and swim in the sea. I run my business and volunteer for the Public Health Collaboration charity organising their annual conference, as well as running my local Explorer Scout group which involves all kinds of things from expeditions to district camps. This year I completed a hut to hut route in the high Swiss mountains and next summer I am planning a long distance bike packing route. As you can tell I don't have any energy problems!

What I want to stress is that not only did I get rid of all my symptoms but my energy and my mood is better than it was before it was obvious that I was ill. I think this is because my energy production was not optimal for a long time before it eventually pretty much shut down and gave me a host of fatigue and mental health symptoms. Now I know how to support my energy I can do anything I want to!
I'm lucky to live on the beautiful west coast of Scotland where I have a large garden, I grow my own fruit and vegetables and have a lovely flock of hens. I'm a real foodie, I love creating delicious dishes and treating myself to the occasional meal out. I love to spend time in nature, simply sitting in the woods or watching our local wildlife like the otters and red squirrels. I like nothing better than to sit in the sun with a coffee or huddle round a fire while the sun sets and the stars begin to appear. I feel at my best connecting with nature and eating real whole food as nature intended.
