Food and oxygen are used to make energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) a molecule that fuels every aspect of our body and brain. In mental health conditions often there is problem with the energy or ATP produced, sometimes it too little (like in depression) but sometimes it can be too much energy or ATP (like in manic phases of bipolar disorder). The root cause is linked to problems with the use of glucose and levels of the hormone insulin. If we feed ourselves too many foods that raise blood glucose which in turn raises insulin, and repeat this again and again, over time we can end up with a metabolic situation known as insulin resistance. An insulin resistant brain is also an inflamed brain so we want to dampen down the mechanisms that are causing this inflammation too.
Fat - The Preferred Fuel For The Brain
In our brain cells we have little organelles called mitochondria, that make our supply of ATP. They produce more energy and a more stable energy supply when they are fuelled on fat. Indeed fat is the preferred fuel for the brain.

Did you know that 70% of your brain is made of fat? All the nerve cells in the brain are insulated with fat to ensure they fire properly to transmit electrical signals. Not only do we need fat in the diet to ensure that the structure of the brain is optimal, but the brain thrives on fat for energy too. When we eat a diet high in fat, a ketogenic diet, you produce ketone bodies which are transported to the cells and used by the mitochondria to make ATP. On a ketogenic diet not only do they produce 30% more ATP, but it also helps to dampen down inflammation because ketones themselves are very anti-inflammatory molecules

Stress can certainly be a contributory factor because chronic stress also raises blood glucose levels and insulin too, adding to the metabolic mayhem going on in the brain.

By adopting a low carbohydrate, ketogenic or carnivore diet and getting sufficient fat of the right kind your brain will be in the best situation to make the most ATP and in turn this helps to reduce symptoms. Often it is possible to reduce or come off some medications (with medical supervision), or avoid having to take them in the first place.
